Topic 6: Modelling and understanding extreme meteorological events

(AWI, KIT, HZG, UFZ, GEOMAR) How and why has the severity and frequency of extreme weather events changed over past decades? What changes can be expected in a future climate? Our understanding of how climate change affects extreme meteorological events is not yet fully understood. There is still a high level of uncertainty regarding how the different exchange processes in the atmosphere are amended by climate change and what consequences are to be expected for the frequency and intensity of different weather systems. In Topic 6, simulation results from high resolution global and regional models are combined with data from different observation systems with the objective to reliably reproduce and statistically analyze extreme events such as storms, heavy precipitation, droughts, and thunderstorms. Expected future changes of extreme events are quantified from an ensemble of regional climate models. Further information on Topic 6 is available in German.
