European scientific organisations establish alliance for climate research

A group of leading climate research organisations from eight European countries established the European Climate Research Alliance (ECRA) in the European Parliament yesterday. Prof. Dr. Karin Lochte, Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of all research centres of the Helmholtz Association that conduct climate research. The European Climate Research Alliance constitutes a powerful network for tackling the scientific challenges of climate change in a combined effort.

Supercomputers Simulate Consequences of Climate Change

15 July 2011
A competence centre for "High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems" (HPSC TerrSys), located at a number of sites, was founded on Friday under the umbrella of Geoverbund ABC/J in cooperation with the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). The aim of Geoverbund ABC/J in founding this centre is to address the new challenges arising from climate change, the growing scarcity of natural resources and increase of risks by pooling scientific competence and applying state-of-the-art methods.

Scientists at Alfred Wegener Institute appointed to key positions for new IPCC Assessment Report

Today the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) announced the authors and experts for its fifth Assessment Report in Geneva. They include Prof. Peter Lemke and Prof. Hans-Otto Pörtner from the Alfred Wegener Institute. Together with colleagues from all over the globe, they play a major role in work on two sub-reports that will be published in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The mission of the IPCC is to determine the state of the climate system and its impacts on biological and human social systems and point out potential political countermeasures.

GKSS scientists make statements on concentration of ash particles after volcanic eruption

Press Release GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht - Some German airlines levelled their criticism against the forecasts of the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) in London on the spread of the ash cloud over Europe, as these forecasts did not provide any precise information on the ash concentration in the atmosphere. Scientists at the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht managed to reconstruct the spread process and make statements on the concentration of ash particles.

Bayer Climate Award 2010 for Professor Peter Lemke

Professor Peter Lemke of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven has been awarded the 50,000 € “Bayer Climate Award 2010” by the Bayer Science & Education Foundation. He is being honoured for his groundbreaking research and pioneering contributions to the understanding of the role of sea ice in the climate system.
